Description

On July 13, 1954, Tacoma's Pat McMurtry (left) fights Bill Boatman at the Tacoma Armory. Davey Ward was the referee. McMurtry won the fight with a knockout as he turned pro that year after a successful amateur career when he went 103-2. As a pro, he went 33-4-1 and became a heavyweight contender. McMurtry, who graduated from Lincoln High School, fought in Tacoma's first Golden Gloves event and he won his weight class. McMurtry became a big Tacoma sports headline as he was ranked as high as the fifth heavyweight in the world.
