Description

Pat McMurtry, a top-ranked heavyweight boxer during the 1950s, stands with his family in 1954 at the Tacoma Athletic Commission headquarters. Standing with him (from left to right) are his father, Clarence, his brother, Mike, and his mother, Maude. Clarence bought his sons boxing gloves every Christmas when they were children, wetting their appetite for boxing. Pat, nicknamed “Irish,” fought in the the first Golden Gloves boxing event hosted by the Tacoma Athletic Commission in 1949 and won his weight class. He went on to be the fifth ranked heavyweight in the world and in 1958 defeated Canadian heavyweight champ George Chuvalo in New York City's Madison Square Garden in a nationally televised fight. Mike had an impressive amateur boxing career, winning a NCAA championship title boxing at Idaho State in 1954. He lost only seven times in 214 amateur bouts. Clarence was Pat's boxing promoter during his son's professional career.
