Description

The right-handed Pat McMurtry was a top-notch heavyweight contender during the 1950s. McMurtry, who graduated from Tacoma's Lincoln High School in 1950, had an opportunity to fight heavyweight champ Floyd Patterson but couldn't come to an agreement on the contract. In a story in the Tacoma News Tribune, McMurtry later said he regretted that decision. It was McMurtry's chance at being the world heavyweight champ. But McMurtry was a knockout slugger and 25 of his 38 pro fights were won by knockouts. He went 103-2 as an amateur and 33-4-1 as a pro.
