Pat McMurtry pokes a left-handed jab through the guard of Chuck Ross in a heavyweight fight back in 1954. McMurtry won the fight. It was McMurtry's first year as a pro fighter after a successful amateur career when he had an impressive 103-2 record. One of McMurtry's favorite fights was his bout in New York City in October 1958 against George Chuvalo, who was the Canadian heavyweight champ and another rising star. The fight was on national TV and McMurtry's locker room was Joe Louis' old dressing room. Joe Louis was at ringside. McMurtry was staggered in the first round, but he recovered and won a lopsided 10-round decision. Chuvalo would later lose to Muhammad Ali, Joe Frazier, George Foreman and Floyd Patterson. McMurtry never got that big fight.Lexicon
