Description

Prior to a fight in 1955, Tacoma's heavyweight contender Pat McMurtry gets his hands tapped by Frankie “Chi Chi” Britt. After going 103-2 in a successful amateur career, McMurtry turned pro in 1954 after serving in the Marines during the Korean War and went on to become a heavyweight contender. Britt fought professionally during the 1920s and brought insight and advice to the corner for McMurtry. In 1956, the pride of Tacoma put a five bout win streak on the line when he faced German veteran Wili Besmanoff. McMurtry entered the fight ranked fifth in the world. Unfortunately for McMurtry, he fought tentatively lost a split decision. The next day McMurtry went to the hospital and was diagnosed with pneumonia.
