Description

After a long and successful boxing career, Pat McMurtry turned to refereeing and is photographed doing just that in a fight between two young boys. After winning his first 16 pro fights and compiling an impressive 33-4-1 pro record, McMurtry was knocked out for about 16 minutes in his final pro fight in early 1960 . But that didn't end his commitment to boxing. He continued to referee and refereed for 29 years. In 1958 in a fight in Seattle against Germany's Willi Besmanoff, McMurtry, who was ranked fifth in the world at the time by Ring Magazine, looked sluggish and lost a split decision. The next day McMurtry went to the hospital and was diagnosed with pneumonia. It was amazing he finished the fight.
