In a humorous moment, Pat McMurtry (middle) dresses up in fireman's gear along with his sparring partner, Jim Walls, and posses for a comical photo with a member of the Portland Fire Department back in 1955. McMurtry, who turned pro as a boxer in 1954, was in Portland for another fight. When McMurtry turned pro after a successful amateur career (he lost only twice in 105 amateur fights), he chose his father, Clarence, to be his manager. His father had a huge influence in why McMurtry got into boxing. When Clarence was married, he told his wife they were going to have two sons and both were going to be boxers. Both Pat and his younger brother, Mike, are considered to be two of the best boxers to come out of Tacoma. They've both been inducted into the Tacoma-Pierce County Sports Hall of Fame.Lexicon
