Description

Tacoma's popular heavyweight boxer Patrick McMurtry leans into Chuck Woodworth and prepares to throw a right hand punch in a fight that occurred in 1955. It was McMurtry's second year as a pro fighter. In 1948 as a student at Lincoln High School, McMurtry won his weight class at the first Golden Gloves tournament held in Tacoma. McMurtry went on to fight at Gonzaga University on scholarship and won some national tournaments, including the NCAA heavyweight title. Then after serving in the Marines during the Korean War, McMurtry turned pro in boxing in 1954. He went 103-2 as an amateur and then 33-4-1 as a pro.
