Description

In 1950 and after graduating from Lincoln High School, the 6-foot-1 Pat McMurtry headed to Gonzaga University on a boxing career. That was interrupted when he enlisted in the Marines during the Korean War. However, he continued to fight and won the All-Marine heavyweight crown. After being discharged from the Marines in December 1953, he turned pro in 1954 and became a heavyweight contender and is considered to be one of the best fighters to come out of Tacoma. He died in 2011 after a battle with liver cancer at age 79.
