Pat McMurtry, who is considered to be the best boxer to ever come out of Tacoma, sits with his family in this black-and-white photo taken in 1955. His daughter, Shannon, sits on his lap and his wife, Phyllis, sits next to him holding their son, Patrick. For many years, they lived at 64th and G Street. McMurtry became a sports celebrity shortly after turning pro in 1954. In October 1958, McMurtry fought the Canadian heavyweight champ George Chuvalo in New York City and the fight was on national TV. McMurtry, using his quickness and strength, won a lopsided 10-round decision against Chuvale after being staggered in the first round. McMurtry's fighting career ended in late 1959 after he was injured in a fight in Portland.Lexicon
