He didn't play other sports while attending Lincoln High School in the late 1940s and focused on boxing. He won 103 of 105 amateur fights before turning pro in 1954 after serving in the Marines during the Korean War. He won his first 16 pro fights and finished with a 33-4-1 record with 25 knockouts. In 1956. McMurtry was on a five bout win streak and was ranked No. 5 in the world by Ring Magazine when he lost a fight in Seattle against Germany's Willi Besmanoff. McMurtry went to the hospital the next day and was diagnosed with pneumonia, explaining why he looked sluggish in his fight.Lexicon
