In his second year as a pro fighter, Tacoma's Pat McMurtry went up against heavyweight contender Bob Albright undefeated. The two heavyweight contenders put on an brutal fight that was held in Seattle in 1955. McMurtry used his quickness to overcome Albright's 28-pound weight advantage. But after a bloody eight rounds, the fight was stopped and ruled a draw. McMurtry injured his right hand in the third round and was sidelined for six months because of the injury. When he recovered, McMurtry won four straight fights by a knockout. In 1959, McMurtry defeated Albright in a rematch, winning by a fifth-round technical knockout. Later that year, McMurtry fought the last fight of his career. He lost by a first-round knockout to Eddie Machen, knocking McMurtry out for 16 minutes and ending his career. X-rays later showed that McMurtry had suffered a brain injury in the fight.Lexicon
