In 1956, Tacoma's Pat McMurtry went up against a hard-punching Bob Albright, who was the California heavyweight champ and like McMurtry a heavyweight contender. In the third round, McMurtry injured his right hand and the bloody fight was stopped in the eighth round and ruled a draw. X-rays showed a bone injury in his right hand, sidelining him for six months. After his hand healed, McMurtry bounced back and won four fights in a row by technical knockouts. That included wins against Bob Dunlap and Cordell Jones, two cagey vets who had fought the best heavyweight fighters in the world. Then on Oct. 13, 1959, McMurtry defeated Albright in a rematch and won by a fifth-round technical knockout. It was his second to last fight of his impressive career.Lexicon
