Description

Tacoma's Pat McMurtry suffered his first setback of his pro career in this heavyweight fight against California's “Big” Bob Albright in Seattle back in 1955. The heavyweight contenders fought to an eight-round draw in what was a bloody fight. McMurtry broke his hand in the third round and the injury would sideline him for six months. When McMurtry turned pro in 1954 after getting out of the Marines, he began his successful pro career and finished 33-4-1 with 25 knockouts. As an amateur he won 103 of his 105 fights and one of his two losses came at the national AAU tournament in Boston in 1951. He broke a bone in his hand that tournament and he decided to continue to fight and lost a close decision in the semifinals. In 1959, McMurtry won his rematch with Albright, winning by a fifth-round technical knockout after breaking Albright's nose.
