Description

Prior to a fight, Tacoma's Pat McMurtry bumps gloves with his opponent and McMurtry's trainer Homer Amundsen watches standing on the right in the ring. Amundsen, who boxed at Dartmouth College, taught boxing to many successful amateurs over the years and he helped start the Golden Gloves in Tacoma in 1949. McMurtry fought in that first Golden Gloves at Tacoma when he a student at Lincoln High School and won his weight class. McMurtry credited his success in the boxing ring to Amundsen. “A lot of credit for our success can be traced right back to Homer,” McMurtry said. “He was one of the best teachers I've ever known.”
