Tacoma's Pat McMurtry waits for Ezzard Charles to weigh in before their fight back in July 1956. It was a special fight for McMurtry, who grew up in Tacoma and graduated from Lincoln High School. The fight was fought in Tacoma's Lincoln Bowl. It was an outdoor fight and a crowd of 10,729 cheering fans came out to see their hometown hero fight the former heavyweight champion of the world. Charles defeated several Hall of Fame fighters in his career, including Rocky Marciano and Joe Lewis. But on this day, McMurtry was the better fighter and he beat Charles in a 10-round decision
