Pat McMurtry sits and gets ready prior to the start of his fight with former heavyweight champ Ezzard Charles. It was a memorable fight for McMurtry, a graduate from Lincoln High School. The fight was in July 1956 at Tacoma's Lincoln Bowl, drawing a crowd of 10,729 fans who saw their hero win a 10-round decision against Charles. It was one of McMurtry's biggest paydays as he pocketed $20,500.
Helping McMurtry, are Pat Herman, Frankie “Chi Chi” Britt and Homer Amundsen. McMurtry later called Amundsen a great teacher and said he played a big role in his success as a boxer.
