Tacoma's Pat McMurtry (right) takes on former heavyweight champ Ezzard Charles in a fight that was fought in July 1956 at Lincoln Bowl in Tacoma. It was just McMurtry's second year as a professional fighter and it was one of the biggest fights of his career. With a crowd of 10,729 cheering fans, McMurtry won a 10-round decision. It was one of McMurtry's biggest paydays of his career. He won $20,500. One month later, McMurtry stepped into the Lincoln Bowl ring again to face the future light heavyweight champion Willie Pastrano. With 11,095 cheering fans watching their hometown hero, McMurtry struggled and lost and still earned $35,000, a huge sum at the time.Made/Created
