Description

Pat McMurtry (right) moves in to throw a punch against former heavyweight champ Ezzard Charles in a night fight at Tacoma's Lincoln Bowl in July 1956. Charles won the world's heavyweight title in 1949 by beating Jersey Joe Walcott in a 15-round decision. He defended his title successfully eight times when he lost the title to Walcott by a seventh round knockout in 1951. He was voted to the Boxing Hall of Fame in 1970 and died in 1975 at age 53. McMurtry won his fight against Charles by a 10-round decision. In 2002, Charles was ranked No. 13 on The Ring magazine's list of 80 best fighters of the last 80 years. It was one of McMurtry's biggest wins and he earned $20,500.
