Description

Former heavyweight champ Ezzard Charles leans into Tacoma's Pat McMurtry to deliver more body punches in this fight that occurred at Tacoma's Lincoln Bowl in July 1956. The 6-foot-1 McMurtry, in his second year as a pro, held on to win a 10-round decision against the former heavyweight champ and eventual Boxing Hall of Famer. Charles had just defeated Bob Albright in his previous fight. Albright had defeated McMurtry in the first fight between the two heavyweight contenders after McMurtry broke his hand. Out of desperation, Charles hit McMurtry low in the sixth and seventh rounds, but McMurtry hung on to win. McMurtry's win against Charles was one of his biggest paydays as he made $20,500. The win helped him rise to fifth in the world, his highest ranking.
