Description

Pat McMurtry photographed after his fight with former heavyweight champ Ezzard Charles in July 1956. McMurtry, a graduate from Lincoln High School in Tacoma, beat Charles at Tacoma's Lincoln Bowl by a decision. It was McMurtry's biggest payday as he earned $20,500. Then the next month in August 1956, a record Tacoma fight crowd of 11,095 again jammed Lincoln Bowl to watch McMurtry fight. This time he lost a 10-round decision to a clever Willie Pastrano. But McMurtry won his next five fights and capped that with a second-round knockout of Carl Bobo Olson and climbed to No. 5, his highest ranking.
