Pat McMurtry trains for his big fight against Ezzard Charles in 1956. McMurtry, who turned pro in 1954, ended up defeating Charles in a 10-round decision and that help boost McMurtry's ranking to fifth heavyweight in the world. McMurtry fought Charles at Tacoma's Lincoln Bowl in front of a 10,729 cheering fans. It was McMurtry's biggest payday as he earned $20,500. It was a big win for McMurtry. Charles had beaten Jersey Joe Walcott to win the heavyweight title in 1949. After turning pro in 1954, McMurtry's father, Clarence McMurtry, became his manager and he went on to have a 33-4-1 record, losing his last two fights of his boxing career.
