Description

In this night fight between Tacoma's popular Pat McMurtry and eventual light-heavyweight champ Willie Pastrano, fans packed Lincoln Bowl in August 24, 1956, drawing a record crowd of 11,095. But McMurtry disappointed the crowd and lost. Just a month early, McMurtry packed Lincoln Bowl again when 10,729 cheering fans showed up to watch him beat former heavyweight champ Ezzard Charles. For his fight against Pastrano, McMurtry, who was nicknamed “Irish,” made $35,000, a huge sum at the time. Lincoln Bowl was a popular venue back then and Elvis Presley performed there in 1957, just a week after McMurtry's fight with Pastrano.
