Description

Tacoma referee Davey Ward breaks things up between Pat McMurtry (left) and Willie Pastrano in a night fight held at Tacoma's Lincoln Bowl in August 1956. McMurtry, who was born in 1932 and grew up in Tacoma and graduated from Lincoln High School, was one of the most popular sports figures in the Northwest in the mid to late 1950s. He was a frequent headline in the newspapers sports section. His fight with Pastrano fight drew 11,095 fans. But despite the cheering support, McMurtry lost to Pastrano, a clever, counter puncher who would go on to become the light heavyweight champion of the world in the 1960s.
