Description

After a successful amateur career when he had an impressive 103-2 record, Pat McMurtry turned pro in 1954 and won his first 16 fights and finished with a 33-4-1 record as a pro. With his knockout power, the 6-foot-1 McMurtry won 25 of his pro fights by a knockout. In October 1958, McMurtry fought the Canadian heavyweight champion George Chuvalo in New York City at Madison Square Garden on national TV. McMurtry used Joe Lewis's locker room. “My heart was pounding,” McMurtry later said about the fight. McMurtry was staggered in the first round and recovered to bloody Chuvalo's nose in the second round and won a lopsided 10-round decision.
