Heavyweight contender Pat McMurtry gets help putting on his boxing gloves prior to a workout on July 28, 1957. Helping McMurtry are Frankie “Chi Chi” Britt and his manager and father, Clarence McMurtry. Clarence, who was an amateur boxer as a young man, became his son's manager when Pat turned pro in 1954. Because of his father, Pat got an early introduction to boxing. Pat and his brother, Mike, who was 14 months younger, got boxing gloves for Christmas gifts in 1939. Pat was just 6 years old. In 1949, Pat won his weight class at Tacoma's first Golden Gloves event.Lexicon
