Description

Tacoma's Pat McMurtry (left) fights Charlie Norkus in a professional heavyweight fight back in 1958 in Cheney Stadium. McMurtry dominated and won by a near unanimous decision. With the encouragement of his father, McMurtry, who was born in 1932, grew up boxing and didn't play any other sports while attending Lincoln High School. He won his weight class in Tacoma's first Golden Gloves tournament in 1948 and turned pro in 1954 after serving in the Marines for three years. Norkus, who was nicknamed the “Bayonne Bomber,” was inducted into New York State's hall of fame for his achievements as a boxer and as a referee.
