Tacoma’s Pat McMurtry, second from left, smiles in the dressing room after his winning fight against Charley Norkus in July 1958 by unanimous decision at Cheney Stadium, Tacoma. Also pictured are Bobby Evans, left, Clarence McMurtry, Stan Naccarato and Dr. Charles Larson. McMurtry went 33-4-1, including 25 knockouts, during his career that saw him ranked as high as fifth by Ring Magazine. He won Tacoma’s first Golden Gloves in 1949 and defeated Canadian heavyweight George Chuvalo in Madison Square Garden in New York City in 1958. McMurtry’s career ended in 1959 after he was knocked out for 17 minutes during a fight against Eddie Machen in the first round in Portland. McMurtry became a referee, working the ring for the next 29 years. McMurtry is a member of the Tacoma Pierce-County Sports Hall of Fame.
