In this color photo taken in 1960, there's some big names in boxing posing for this picture and they're from Tacoma. There's (from left to right) Davey Ward, Ed Honeywell, Freddie Steele and Pat McMurtry. Steele was the light-heavyweight champ of the world from 1936 to 1938 and after his boxing career he went to Hollywood to be in movies. Before Ward became a notable boxing referee, he boxed professionally and Steele was in his corner during bouts early in his career, first when he was an amateur and then as a pro. McMurtry, who grew up in Tacoma, was a top-ranked heavyweight contender in the 1950s and is considered to be among the best boxers to ever come out of Tacoma. Honeywell was a longtime sportswriter at the Tacoma News Tribune.Lexicon
