Pat McMurtry (middle) stands behind his father, Clarence McMurtry, who was speaking at the microphone in this black-and-white photo taken in 1963 at the prison on McNeil Island. Also in the picture is Cy Rubado, the recreation programer at McNeil Island prison. Clarence became Pat's manager when his son turned to pro boxing in 1954. Clarence had a major influence on getting his son involved in boxing. When Clarence was married, he told his wife they were going to have two sons and both were going to box. Clarence gave his sons boxing gloves for Christmas when they were 5 and 6 years old. Pat and his brother, Mike, who is 14 months younger, are considered to be two of the best boxers to ever come out of Tacoma. They were both named to the Tacoma Pierce County Sports Hall of Fame.Lexicon
