Pat McMurtry sits with the Diamond Belt champions in 1966. Besides being a top-ranked heavyweight boxer, McMurtry was also a boxing referee for 29 years, connecting him with the stars of tomorrow. In 1959, McMurtry's successful boxing career ended later that year when he went to Portland and fought fourth ranked Eddie Machen, who knocked McMurtry down three times in the first round to win by a technical knockdown. Machen's only loss was a stunning upset to Ingemar Johansson the previous year in Sweden. Neurological exams the next day showed McMurtry had suffered permanent brain damage, ending his career and affecting his balance for life.Lexicon
