Pat McMurtry referees a fight involving Pepper Romero on Oct. 14, 1968 in Las Vegas. McMutry's boxing career ended in October 1959 in a fight in Portland against Eddie Nachen, who was a powerhouse puncher and his only pro loss was to Ingemar Johansson. McMurtry was decked several times in the first round and when he struggled to get up the fight was over at 2:11 of the first round. He was knocked out for 17 minutes. Neurological exams afterward showed that McMurtry had suffered permanent brain damage, which affected his balance for the rest of his life. But McMurtry didn't say goodbye to boxing and he continued to referee.Lexicon
