After McMurtry's successful professional boxing career ended after getting knocked out in a fight in October 1959, he became a referee for amateur and professional boxing matches for many years. Naccarato, who played minor league baseball as a young man, was one of the most influential people in shaping sports in Tacoma. He was a successful businessman who loved sports.
