Description

Tacoma's Pat McMurtry (left) is presented with a trophy. McMurtry's amateur and pro boxing careers were filled with him winning trophies. McMurtry won his weight class at Tacoma's first Golden Gloves event back in 1949. After graduating from Lincoln High School, McMurtry went to Gonzaga University on a boxing scholarship and then during the Korean War he joined the Marines, where he won the All-Marine trophy for winning his heavyweight division. He turned pro in 1954 and he became a heavyweight contender and was ranked fifth in the world in the late 1950s.
