Description

Pat McMurtry sits in front of a drawing of him boxing on the wall in the background. When McMurtry turned pro in 1954 his father, Clarence became his manager. Clarence was a major influence in his son's involvement in boxing from the start. When Clarence was married, he told his wife they were going to have two sons and they were both going to box. He was right. In the summer of 1956, McMurtry fought twice in Tacoma's Lincoln Bowl, drawing crowds of 10,729 in July and 11,095 in August. He was the biggest sports figure of his time in the Northwest and was a top heavyweight contender and ranked as high as fifth in the world.
