Description

As he did throughout his amateur boxing career, Tacoma's Mike McMurtry stands with the weight-class winners after another boxing tournament. McMurtry fought an impressive 214 amateur bouts over 12 years, losing only seven. He won the NCAA heavyweight boxing championship in 1954 while boxing for Idaho State. Mike and his older brother, Pat, are considered to be among the best boxers to come out of Tacoma. McMurtry treasured his years of boxing even though he developed epilepsy as a result of a brain injury suffered in his only professional fight that happened in 1959. Over the years after he retired from boxing, McMurtry helped a swimming program for the handicapped in Tacoma. He has been honored by the Red Cross for his helping hand.
