Description

Tacoma's Mike McMurtry (top row, second from the right) did what he did throughout his successful amateur boxing career. He stood with the winners, holding another trophy. Mike and his older brother, Pat, are both in the Tacoma-Pierce County Sports Hall of Fame. Mike boxed in college for both Gonzaga and Idaho State, where he won the NCAA heavyweight championship in 1954. After getting a scholarship for boxing to go Gonzaga out of high school, McMurtry transferred to Idaho State when Gonzaga dropped its boxing program. Over a busy 12-year amateur boxing career, he compiled an impressive 207-7 record.
