Mike McMurtry, sitting third from the right in the front row, sits with his teammates at Idaho State College. McMurtry won a NCAA heavyweight title boxing for Idaho State. In his quest for the NCAA title, McMurtry defeated a previously undefeated Bob Hinds to win the 1954 heavyweight championship. McMurtry fought as an amateur for 12 years and piled up an impressive 207-7 record. He said he cherished his years of boxing even though he developed epilepsy in 1959 as a result of a brain injury suffered in his only professional fight.
