Tacoma's Mike McMurtry (back row, second from right) stands in this photo taken of the runner-ups in their weight class at the 1952 National Intercollegiate boxing tournament in Madison, Wisconsin. McMurtry is considered to be one of the top boxers to come out of Tacoma and had a impressive amateur career. He fought an incredible 214 amateur bouts, losing only seven. After college he joined the Marines and continued to box. Then in 1959, McMurtry fought his first pro fight, facing Ken Kass at Seattle's Sick's Stadium. McMurtry suffered a head injury in that bout, ending his career. That fight was a preliminary bout that day to his older brother's fight. His older brother, Pat McMurtry, boxed professionally and fought in several heavyweight championship bouts.
