Description

Mike McMurtry collected many mementos over his sterling amateur boxing career. Over a successful 12-year amateur career, McMurtry compiled an impressive 207-7 record. That included a 1954 NCAA heavyweight title while he boxed at Idaho State. In 1959, McMurtry fought his first pro fight when he boxed against Ken Kass at Sick's Stadium in Seattle as a preliminary bout to his brother Pat's main event. Mike suffered a head injury in that fight and three days later doctors found a blood clot when they did surgery, ending his boxing career. McMurtry said he cherished his years of boxing even though he developed epilepsy as a result of his brain injury.
