Tacoma's Mike McMurtry receives the Walter A. Woodard Memorial Trophy as the best boxer in the Seventh IIBT tournament in 1956. Mike and his older brother Pat were introduced to boxing when they were five and seven years old. Their father, Clarence, who was a former amateur boxer, gave his sons boxing gloves for Christmas when they were kids. McMurtry had a successful 12-year amateur boxing career, finishing with a 207-7 record and winning a NCAA title in 1954 while attending Idaho State College.Lexicon
