McMurtry, who grew up in Tacoma, was boxing for Idaho State College and his opponent was Gordie Gladson of Washington State College. McMurtry had an impressive 12-year amateur boxing career, piling up a 207-7 record that included a NCAA championship in 1954 while boxing for Idaho State. McMurtry attended Lincoln High School and didn't play any other sports, concentrating instead on boxing. He ended up getting a boxing scholarship to Gonzaga out of high school and transferred to Idaho State after Gonzaga dropped its boxing program.
