Description

Mike McMurtry throws another punch as the referee breaks it up as his opponent Gordie Gladson of Washington State College leans against the ropes. McMurtry, who grew up in Tacoma, was boxing for Idaho State College and his opponent was Gordie Gladson of Washington State College. McMurtry had an impressive 12-year amateur boxing career, piling up a 207-7 record that included a NCAA championship in 1954 while boxing for Idaho State. McMurtry attended Lincoln High School and didn't play any other sports, concentrating instead on boxing. He ended up getting a boxing scholarship to Gonzaga out of high school and transferred to Idaho State after Gonzaga dropped its boxing program. McMurtry's older brother, Pat, also got a scholarship to Gonzaga before joining the Marines.
