1997 Tacoma Athletic Commission's Golden Gloves Committee stands in front of a Tacoma Athletic Commission banner. From left to right is Stan Farber, Brian Hendricks, Greg Plancich, Scott Nordi and Morris McCallum. Farber was a sportswriter for the Tacoma News Tribune for 27 years, beginning in 1959 when he graduated from Stadium High School. The first Golden Gloves events held in Tacoma happened in 1949. The Tacoma Golden Gloves is now the second longest boxing event of its kind in the United States. The national Golden Gloves tournament began in 1962 and some of the past winners like Muhammad Ali, Joe Frazier and Barney Ross went on to successful pro careers.
