Description

Pat Smith was a tough-minded guard for the Bellarmine Prep basketball team in the late 1960s, a 5-9, 145 pound point guard who helped guide the team to the 1967 AA State Tournament, where he averaged 6.3 points per game. His best sport, however, was baseball, where he played for the Cheney Studs as a 16-year old and was eventually drafted into professional baseball as a shortstop. He was selected by the Kansas City Royals in the 26th round — 597th overall and just three spots behind long-time big leaguer Ken Forsch — of the 1968 Draft. He never played professionally and as of the 2018 Amateur Free Agent Draft, Smith is one of eight players having been drafted out of Bellarmine, with Boston Red Sox and Chicago Cubs pitcher Jon Lester the longest serving and most successful.
