Description

Mount Tahoma High graduate John Hunt set a record at Western Washington University (called Western Washington State College at the time) on June 3, 1966, when he long jumped 24-feet, 3/4-inches to finish second at the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics National Track & Field Championships in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. Hunt, a sophomore at the time, won three conference and district titles at WWU. The school was unable to send a coach along with Hunt and the other athlete who qualified for nationals. "They sent us by ourselves," Hunt said in an article written by long-time WWU sports information director Paul Madison. "Coach (Stan) LeProtti wasn't able to go. We were just two 19-year-old bumpkins, neither one of us had ever flown before, and we just pulled into Sioux Falls. We went to meet headquarters and picked up our packets. Dave placed fourth and I was second. When we returned, Dr. (Bill) Tomaras (Western Director of Athletics) picked us up at the airport and he was blown away that we'd both placed." Hunt’s school record stood for 49 years. It finally fell on May 8, 2015, when Brett Watson jumped 24-1 3/4 to win the Great Northwest Athletic Conference Championships
