Description

The Harlem Globetrotters have visited Tacoma many times for fund-raising exhibitions over the years, starting with a show organized by the infant Tacoma War Athletic Commission (later TAC) on Jan. 1, 1943. On that first visit, the Globies faced a team of soldiers called the Fort Lewis Warriors in front of a crowd of more than 2,500 at the Tacoma Armory. More than 35 years later, in 1979, the Globetrotters visited for another Tacoma-area exhibition. The roster was: (back row, left to right) John Smith, Twiggy Sanders, Theodis Lee, Lou Dunbar and Gerald Smith; front row (l-r) Osborne Lockhart, Mel Davis, Marques Haynes, Jimmy Blacklock and Vince Humphrey. John Smith was a star player at UPS in 1968-69, when he scored 1,002 points for the Loggers.
