Description

all of Famer Babe Ruth of the New York Yankees, left, holds David Metcalf, son of Tacoma Times sports editor Elliott Metcalf, while visiting Tacoma in 1926. Ruth played two rounds of golf at Fircrest Gold Club and was featured in a story in the Dec. 12 edition of the Tacoma Sunday Ledger. Ruth was coming off a season when he hit .372 with 47 home runs and 153 RBIs, both league-highs, as the Yankees won the American League pennant but lost in the World Series in seven games to the St. Louis Cardinals. The World Series ended when Ruth was thrown out by 10 feet while trying to steal second base in the bottom of the ninth inning of Game 7, a 3-2 Cardinals victory.
