Ruth was coming off a season when he hit .372 with 47 home runs and 153 RBIs, both league-highs, as the Yankees won the American League pennant but lost in the World Series in seven games to the St. Louis Cardinals. The World Series ended when Ruth was thrown out by 10 feet while trying to steal second base in the bottom of the ninth inning of Game 7, a 3-2 Cardinals victory.
