Description

Marjorie (Jefferies) Shanaman, seen smiling and wearing her golfing outfit and holding a club, paved the way for many of today’s female golfers having ventured onto the course in the 1920s. Jefferies Shanaman held a two-handicap at age 18 in 1925 and won the Tacoma Country and Golf Club women’s club championship in 1927 and 1928. She made it to the semifinal round of the women’s state championship in 1927 and was the 1928 winner of the first-ever Tacoma All-City Women’s golf championship. She continued her success at the state level by winning the Washington Women’s Championship in 1928 and defeated Mrs. Guy Riegel, the 1926 Pacific Northwest Golf Association champion, 1-up to win the crown. She is a member of the Tacoma-Pierce County Sports Hall of Fame. Photo donated by Fred Shanaman Jr.
