Description

Lenny Wilkens had two stints as coach of the Seattle SuperSonics. He was player/coach for the Sonics from 1969-72, compiling a 121-125 record. Wilkens was player/coach of the Portland Trail Blazers 1974-75, retiring as a player after that season but staying on as coach for the 1975-76 season. After taking a year off, Wilkens was hired to replace Bob Hopkins, who was fired after a 5-17 start during the 1977-78 season, as the coach of the SuperSonics. Wilkens guided the SuperSonics to the 1978 NBA World Championship Series, losing in seven games to the Washington Bullets. Wilkens coached the SuperSonics to the NBA championship the following season, beating the Bullets in five games for the franchise's lone NBA title.
