Tacoma's Ruggles Larson stands with his teammates on the University of Gonzaga's boxing team in 1950. Larson began his 11-year amateur boxing career in 1947 and fought in numerous Gold Glove tournaments, losing in the finals by split decisions three times. In 119 amateur bouts, Larson, a 1952 graduate from Lincoln High School, finished with 93 wins, 23 losses and three draws. In 1956, he won the Vancouver Island title and lost in the semifinals of the Seattle Golden Gloves that same year.
